This is why doctors are always referred to as "practicing" medicine. I would feel the same way...actually I do. Several years ago I went to a urologist who kept me waiting in his office while he finished teaching his class. I basically tore him a new one when he got there. "Post Doc degree means nothing to me, my dad is a PhD, mom is an M.A, sister is a PhD, brother-in law, PhD, brother M.A., sister in law, M.A., me - M.A. all that means is you completed school. Congrats! now you need to learn who you want to serve, the public or the students. Regardless of your choice, you need to pick one because you can't have two masters - it's got to either be the students or the clients."

He wasn't happy, but really had no answer. You gotta talk to these people like regular humans because that's all they are, regardless of their God complexes. Which reminds me of a joke:

A Dr. dies and goes to heaven...St. Pete meets him and points to a chair saying it's not time yet. meanwhile all these people keep walking up past him and get a nod from Pete.

He bites his tongue for a while when finally a little old man with a stethoscope comes by, gets a nod and walks in. That tears it - he goes up to Pete and demands to know what's going on. he's a great man who's saved thousands of lives, and all these people go in before him, but that little old doctor. How dare he.

Pete replies "Little doctor? Nononononono, that's God, sometimes he just plays doctor..."

Another thing that I noticed while processing HDR RAW files for HDR, is that it makes a difference if you correct WB, contrast, etc. before sending the files to Photomatix, versus sending them straight from the camera.

The blog has some selected images. You can see a larger collection here:

Adolfo,

Hey there! I hope you had a great trip!

I do agree, sometimes the shadowing isn't super realistic. Done wrong, I've seen super purple shadows that don't belong anywhere. Still, as I've been playing with HDR and dialing things in, comparing to original exposures, etc, I've been becoming more and more satisfied with where I can take HDR landscapes.

I will be doing some comparisons with some neutral density filters this spring. One of the projects I've got in mind. We'll see what we can do. More and more I find myself toying with Topaz and just dealing with single exposures.

I'll be popping by your blog later this morning. Big Bend is on my list of places to see. :)

I sympathize Richard.
I have had my share of miss diagnoses...mine were around 2004-2005. At some point, dealing withe doctors became as frustrating as the physical ailments.

Hang in there!

I just finished a week of shooting at Big Bend National Park. The high mountains an canyons throw plenty of 5+ EV contrasty exposures. I shoot several scenes with NG filters and HDR to compare results. One advantage of this trip is that I am traveling with my development/processing gear, so after the session I have very fresh in my mind how the scene actually looks. In some cases I was processing the image 30 minutes after the actual capture time.

It was a struggle to get a realistic HDR image. In the best of cases, I will get the image to look real, but the light behavior was not the one from the real scene. The -microcontrast & smoothing - settings create non-existing shadows and grayed areas in the photo.

Still, if someone sees the photo and does know how the scene looked...it looks "real".

Here is one:

Both need work, and I really had to push to get them to where they are. "Somebody" (I don't know who) underexposed too much to get the windows..... These really should have been 9 exposures to cover all I wanted to. Next time, next time......
