G11 HDR

Shot with the G11 bracketed for HDR. Tripod is a must!

Yesterday I took a few long walks in between working.  It was a Saturday after all, and the weather was pretty amazing.  Great clouds, storms building and falling apart, comfortable hiking temperature…..  Who wants to sit inside all day contacting RV parks about improving their websites?

So yes, a few walks were taken.  Into the Dells, down to the lake, around the campground.  Just beautiful.  And this morning is looking just as nice.  With that in mind, I need to write this post as fast as I can, I want to get outside!  🙂

It’s only taken a day for me to figure out how to deal with the Canon G11 in non “point and shoot” mode.  Whenever I do landscapes I prefer to shoot in Aperture Priority mode.  I set the aperture I want, the camera works out the shutter speed for me.  The big thing with the Canon G11?  I shouldn’t be touching it at all when taking a shot.

So, the G11 was mounted on my Manfroto tripod, and the self timer was set for all of my shots.  2 seconds.  Set the camera, compose, click, take your hands off the camera!  And voila, I’m happier with images out of the camera.

There’s a shutter lag associated with mine.  When I click the button I’d say it takes a second and a half before it really fires.  That’s room for making a mess of an image.  So this camera forces me to practice what I preach.  Tripod, tripod, tripod, and oh yeah, tripod.

The reason I bought the G11 years ago was pretty simple.  Lugging around a big DSLR with a big lens in my hiking / cycling pack is annoying.  Knowing that the G series cameras could shoot RAW (my preferred mode) the camera was appealing.  But after a few handheld uses…..yeah, it got relegated to my camera bag.

Now I’m seeing its potential.  I’m going to need a small light weight tripod to go in my hiking pack.  My current tripod is big and heavy, and inconvenient if I’m on my mountain bike.  If I can work out a better tripod solution I think we’ll see more G11 use.
