About to launch the telephone pole

About to launch the telephone pole

Ah yes, tis that time a year once more.  And every year I totally miss the Highland games……

But not this year.  I popped by for a few minutes to watch the festivities.  Bag pipes, a few swords, some folks dressed up in costume, etc.  Good stuff.  The really good stuff of course are the actual games.

I must admit, I don’t know the names of the games.  One game I’d entitle, “Chucking a telepone pole and not getting hurt.”  Another would be, “Throwing a giant weight over your head and surviving……”

Watching the games for a while I wondered where the paramedics were, and how prepared they were for blunt force trauma.  Seriously.  Several people dropped the telephone pole.  Guys were flinging 45lb weights right above their heads.  The folks with the bag pipes seemed pretty safe though!

While at the games I saw no injuries, trauma, or people dodging flying telephone poles (except the ones that came back at the thrower).  Everyone seemed to be having fun, and the participants seemed really into throwing these heavy and awkward objects.

At no time did I consider trying to throw large objects.  I am sure there’s something to be said for throwing large objects, but I’ve got too many hobbies already.

Well, enough with my commentary.  Take a look at the flying objects and the people who throw them in the following photos………….

Yup, that's a telephone pole alright!

It's at this moment in the parabola where I'd be totally moving out of the way!

This shot leaves me wondering....what are these large weights used for beyond throwing?

The guys throwing the weights made me nervous, so I watched a little more pole chucking.

Well, there you go.  Some experimentation with the 5D in a high speed mode with my 70-200mm lens.  Not too bad.  More experimentation is needed of course.  Fun to watch the folks at the Highland games too!  You just wouldn’t catch me throwing any of the objects seen here!  🙂
